KYBELLA® is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring gut enzyme, which is used to dissolve fat cells and reduce small areas of excess fat. Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectible to permanently treat submental fat, also known as the double chin.
Kybella is administered as a series of injections to the treatment area under the chin, destroying fat cells and producing gradual results. Everyone’s chin profile is different, so your physician will tailor treatment to you. The number of treatment sessions will vary based on the amount of fat under the chin and your treatment goals.
Each session requires multiple injections to the area being treated and patients typically need several treatment sessions to get the results they want, often three to four treatments. Outcome of course depends on your unique anatomy, the amount of excess fat you want to treat and whether or not your skin has good elasticity.
Kybella is recommended as a nonsurgical alternative to permanently dissolve fat cells. Kybella is a quick procedure, taking just 15 minutes to complete
Kybella is not recommended for larger pockets of unwanted fat; you are better off researching body-contouring treatments or even considering surgery for larger areas. It is also critical to make sure you see a skilled, experienced injector who will make sure you are the right candidate for the procedure — younger patients typically see better results than people over 50 who may have excess skin once the fat is removed.
A Kybella appointment starts with an anatomic analysis and assessment by your provider and documentation so you can track your progress. The provider will measure the treatment area and mark injection sites then sterilize the area. A numbing cream will be applied before treatment to reduce discomfort. You may get anywhere from 20-30 injections depending on how much fullness you have.
After your treatment you should expect some swelling and possible bruising so avoid treatment before a big event. Some patients report a “jiggling” sensation as the area swells and fat cells dissolve. Avoid strenuous exercise for 4-5 days post-treatment, as well as hot tubs, saunas and hot yoga. Ice the area and avoid green tea, Omega 3s and aspirin to help reduce swelling.
